Pre-Reading Activities: To Hope and Back<\/h2>\n

Before beginning to read the book, it is\u00a0<\/span>critical<\/u>\u00a0<\/span>that students have a basic understanding of Canada’s approach to immigration throughout its early history, not just for Jewish immigrants but for all immigrants to Canada. This is where the expectations regarding Jewish immigration and the Holocaust fit into the rest of the Social Studies curriculum. Since the Holocaust is a very difficult topic to teach and understand, it is also important for students to have a basic conceptual understanding of what happened in Europe before they look at how those events shaped Canada’s response.<\/div>\n

I provide time for\u00a0students to explore the magazines and have small group discussions about the information that is found within; I don’t assign any particular activities, because I just want them to spend some time learning about individual and group stories. Eastern European Experiences Video<\/strong>
<\/span><\/p>\n

Immigration between 1867 and 1914 resulted in an important period of population growth in Canada. Significant changes that occurred after Confederation made an immigration boom possible in the Prairies. Canada’s new transcontinental railway made travel across the country easier. The Dominion Lands Act of 1872 made free and fertile homesteads available for settlers. The Department of the Interior began working to attract hard-working immigrants to the Canadian prairies offering free land. Europeans, including Romanians, Hungarians, Ukrainians, Jews, Doukhobors and Mennonites were motivated to come to settle in the west, and begin farming. All was not easy!<\/span><\/p>\n

Black Experiences Video<\/strong><\/div>\n
\u200bFrom enslaved people during the eras of New France and British North America, to the community of Africville in Nova Scotia, this program examines a variety of Black experiences from Canada’s history. Learn about those seeking freedom from enslavement in the United States during the American Revolution and during the time of the Underground Railroad. Also, the experiences of African-American migrants arriving in British Columbia during the 1850s and those journeying to the Canadian Prairies in the early 1900s are outlined.<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/div>\n

Asian Experiences Video<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

This program examines the experiences of Chinese, Japanese and South Asian immigrants in Canada. These people ventured to Canada for various reasons including work, escaping war and poverty in their homeland and the lure of a young growing nation. Canada held hope with work on the railway, a gold rush and free land. This program investigates the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors that influenced their arrival here and the problems, including racism, they encountered.<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/div>\n

There are 3 videos about 3 different groups of immigrants: Eastern European, Black, Asian.\u00a0Share the\u00a0<\/span>Google Doc: Push and Pull Factors<\/a>\u00a0on Google Classroom (make a copy for each student). Watch each video, pausing as necessary to fill in the gaps and clarify information. After each video, students should fill in the chart for each of the sub-groups. I do this\u00a0together as a class, and my students record their answers on their own forms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b<\/span>NOTE:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>You will notice that the chart looks different for 2 of the groups in this section. It’s critical to explain that you can only have push\/pull factors when an individual has freedom and can make their own choices. If a person is taken by force, as in the case of enslaved people, then they don’t have an opportunity to consider push\/pull factors.<\/span><\/p>\n
